What are Intraocular lenses or IOLs?

Intraocular Lenses or IOLs are artificial lenses made of plastic, acrylic, or silicone for implantation after cataract removal surgery. The IOL material range from rigid plastic to flexible foldable lenses. Most are coated to block ultraviolet light and protect your eyes from the sun's harmful rays.

What is a Custom IOLs?

Monofocal IOL lenses have a single focusing distance. Eyeglasses will generally be needed for reading or close up work.

Multifocal IOL lenses provide both distance and near focus at the same time. The lens has different zones set at different powers.

Extended Depth of Focus (EDOF) IOL lenses sharpen near and far vision, but with only one corrective zone, which “extends” to cover both distances. This may mean less effort to re-focus between distances.

Accommodative IOL lenses work with eye muscle movements, allowing focusing at different distances.

Toric IOL lenses correct for astigmatism which is a refractive error caused by an uneven curve in your cornea or lens.

Does insurance cover IOLs?

Only the monofocal IOL is covered by Medicare and insurance. Custom IOL lenses such as the Multifocal, Extended Depth of Focus, Accommodative and Toric IOL lenses are not covered.

Accommodative IOLs

Crystalens™ Lenses (B&L)  are FDA-approved accommodative intraocular lenses, offering distance vision correction as well as intermediate vision correcting.  The surface of the Crystalens has been shaped to enhance the depth of focus with a proprietary optical modification.  The enhanced optic provides an increased depth of focus which is designed to improve near vision without compromising intermediate or distance vision.  The Crystalens lens does this without inducing increased undesirable dysphotopsia or night vision symptoms.

Presbyopia with Astigmatism-Correcting Accommodative IOLs

TRULIGN™ Toric (B&L) Lenses are FDA-approved Crystalens accommodative intraocular lenses with astigmatism-correcting technology. They offer astigmatic correction while delivering a broader range of vision for activities like using a computer, driving, hobbies and crafts, and socializing.

Presbyopia Correcting Multifocal IOLs

PanOptix™ IOL (Alcon Surgical) is a trifocal IOL providing near, intermediate, and distance vision correction.

ReStoR™ IOL (Alcon Surgical) is a multifocal IOL with a unique design providing near vision by utilizing different zones on the lens itself.

Tecnis Multifocal IOL (Abbott) has been designed to provide excellent vision at all distances, under any lighting condition especially low-light vision. Side effects associated with multifocal IOLs include slightly more glare and halos at night; although these do diminish over time.

Tecnis Symfony IOL (Abbott) is an extended depth of focus IOL that combines two unique technologies for outstanding visual performance: elongating the focus to the eye to provide a continuous range of high quality vision and correcting chromatic aberration (color distortion) to provide sharp vision in all lighting conditions.

Toric IOLs

Astigmatism-correcting Toric IOLs are recommended to correct the blurring of vision at all distances due to astigmatism, a condition caused by the cornea being football-shaped.

Current toric IOL options include:

PanOptix Toric™ IOL (Alcon Surgical) is a trifocal IOL with astigmatism correction.

Acrysof Toric™ IOL (Alcon Surgical) and Tecnis Toric™ IOL (Abbott), both designed to reduce or eliminate corneal astigmatism and significantly improve uncorrected distance vision after cataract removal surgery.

Technis Symfony IOL (Abbott) is an extended Range of Vision IOL indicated for primary implantation for those patients with greater than or equal to 1 diopter of preoperative astigmatism in whom a cataract lens has been removed.
